Going to school can be very challenging for students, but also for their parents or their guardians. They may experience bullying, poor grades, difficult situations at home, learning difficulties, and more. Sometimes students need a third party to solve problems. Therefore, social intervention in education can be important.

The years you spend in school have an impact on the rest of your life. This part of your life often forms a large part of your personality. You could even say that there you learn to find your place in society. In those years you also spend a lot of time with your peers.

Even though each student’s context is different, the educational institution must do its part so that the students, regardless of their social or cultural background, can build a positive self-image.

Schools should also help them participate in the daily social life of the school. It is also important that they can take advantage of all the educational opportunities available to them (Fernández and Fernández, 2011).

It is important to reiterate that the educational process involves putting the student in a situation where he can develop freely and harmoniously.

Rosell (1998) argues that this process should be considered as a whole. This means that it must include teachers as well as other experts who can fill the “gaps” in the education system. Psychologists, social workers and educational psychologists are just a few examples of such experts, but also speech therapists, for example.

In some autonomous communities, the government has created the position of technical professor of community services. According to the authorities we cited earlier, they have created these positions to intervene efficiently in high-risk situations.

They also created them to avoid the possible social and educational exclusion of students in these situations. With this, they hoped that these students would have a better chance of getting involved in and taking advantage of compulsory secondary education.

In addition to this position, certain educational orientation teams and educational psychologists are also available. Their job is to assess, support and collaborate with the faculty to improve the quality of education.

The International Federation of Social Workers believes that school is the first place to identify family and social problems (FITS quoted in Roselló, 1998). Let’s not forget that any problem detected early can help you avoid or mitigate its effects.

The aim of social intervention in education is to work together so that each student has the same opportunities as the others. This should certainly happen regardless of origin, family situation or social environment.

You can achieve this by working with the student and his or her family. It is important to ensure that the people responsible for the student are involved. Thus, the student can achieve complete adaptation and success.

You could also say that intervention usually starts with identifying problems. These interventions are often linked to the student’s private situation. This means that outside associations or companies conduct educational and informational conversations.

What can we do from the educational institution itself?

Since experts are available, we must emphasize the importance of teaching students a healthy lifestyle. When we talk about “healthy”, people often think that it only refers to physical health.

However, you should not forget the importance of mental health. It is essential to develop healthy teens and adults, who have social skills and healthy recreational alternatives in terms of life development.

The role of the social worker in education

Social workers can apply their skills in different contexts. One is the educational context. However, we must bear in mind that there is still much to be discovered in this area. Nevertheless, there are still many opportunities for people in this profession.

Within the social intervention in education we would like to point out a number of different functions (Iglesias and Ortuño, 2017):

  • Collaborate in setting up projects involving educational centers. This is especially important when it comes to the conditions of the socio-cultural environment and the social and family life of children.
  • Informing and directing parents about the scope of their duties and how best to apply their parenting.
  • Attending and solving individual situations in the students. Some examples of this are frequent absences and poor performance. Socially, there may be the following potential problems:
    • problems relating to others or communicating with them
    • an inability to adapt to change
    • problems interacting with others or aggression
  • Contribute to the development of training programs for families.
  • Creating and distributing material that may be useful to the teachers. This also includes resources that may be of use.
  • Provide the education center with the necessary information about the resources available in the community.
  • Educating others about social and educational needs that must be taken into account to implement appropriate educational planning.

The position of social workers

The position of the social worker within education should also be more important than it is now. As experts of change, they should also play a fundamental role in the educational community.

They are also essential for improving the well-being of people in their communities and the way they interact with each other. Remember that the seeds for a better future lie in a good foundation for the minors you are raising today.
