Is happiness a state of mind? In today’s society, happiness seems to be the common goal. No matter how hard we strive for it, it always seems to escape us.
There are hundreds of books and gatherings that claim to have the formula for happiness. However, they are all very vague. Many of them also state that happiness comes from outside. They believe that happiness is on top of a mountain that you have to climb. However, the truth is that happiness is indeed a state of mind.
Happiness depends on the circumstances and therefore also on individuality. That is also the reason that happiness will be different for every person.
It is a mistake to seek happiness outside of us
Everything around you urges you to look outside of yourself for happiness. If you buy a new car, you will be happy. If you find a new partner, you will be happy. This is why it is so tempting to bite into the apple of advertising. The danger here is that advertising talks about joy and not happiness.
Happiness is more permanent. It also doesn’t disappear as easily or as quickly as the bubbles in a glass of champagne. In addition, it is also an echo that is resistant to emotions. Whatever happens, it remains within you. Maybe it’s a special ability to pick up the pieces in your life and learn from them.
The power of our thoughts
If happiness is a state of mind, your thoughts are the main actors. Often your emotions or circumstances motivate your thoughts. They also often don’t follow the storyline in favor of your interests.
The good news, however, is that you can intervene in that storyline. You just need to observe your thoughts. To achieve this goal, it may be a good idea to practice meditation.
Observe the large number of automatic thoughts you have throughout the day. Determine how many of those thoughts are complaints, judgments, regrets, or self-criticisms. It is very important that you become aware of this. It will make you discover and rediscover a part of yourself that you may have forgotten or never worked on.
You can start looking at mistakes or failures as opportunities. Then you will take a big step towards realizing that happiness is a state of mind.
For example, getting fired might be that little push you needed to change jobs. Maybe that’s what you’ve always wanted to do. The key is to reinforce positive thoughts and not the negative ones.
Your state of mind and happiness
Feeling good also does not mean that negative thoughts do not arise in your mind. Instead, it will be a place where it becomes harder for those negative thoughts to grow. Matthieu Ricard has already pointed this out.
Many people consider him to be ‘the happiest person in the world’. He says we can think of the sea. This will help us to understand it. The surface of the sea changes due to the wind or the waves. The depths of the sea remain calm.
Happiness is a state of mind
Many people think that happiness is well-being. For others, it’s balance. It is not transient but rather permanent. To make this possible, you must find your own definition of happiness.
The first step is to stay away from the happiness advertisers who tell you what you need. Happiness is more than buying things. It has everything to do with making decisions and choices wisely. After all, happiness is ultimately a state of mind.
